DESIGN CONCEPT

This family wanted to combine two bedrooms and a bathroom to create one master suite. The challenge of this project was that we needed to remodel a section of this 1930s home to meet the clients’ needs while safeguarding the original charm and structural integrity of the original home. We did this by incorporating contemporary conveniences into the classic architectural features to create a harmonious fusion of functionality and aesthetic allure.

ORIGINAL FLOOR PLAN

This home included two very small bedrooms with a bathroom in between. The homeowners were using one bedroom as a closet and the other as their bedroom. Plus, both rooms were too small for a king-sized bed. By completely reconfiguring the space, we were able to build a large functional master suite with room for their bed, closet space, and a new master bathroom.

NEW FLOOR PLAN

The new floor plan design eliminates the walls separating the two smaller bedrooms and the bathroom and creates a single master bedroom and ensuite. The new bath features a half-wall walk in shower with a rain shower head and handheld nozzle. It also includes built-in shelving and a toilet topper for additional storage in lieu of a linen closet.

This bathroom boasts Venetian bronze lighting fixtures, plumbing fittings, and accessories that complement the room’s classic traditional aesthetics while introducing a touch of texture.

The color of the vanity ties into the wall color and helps to add a pop of color to the space.

The flooring in both the main area and the shower are glossy hexagon patterned porcelain tiles in a flower pattern.

CABINETS

The vanity selected was modified to better fit the aesthetic of the room. It was outfitted with a new venetian bronze faucet as well as traditional crystal-style knobs. The color of the vanity ties into the wall color and helps to add a pop of color to the space.

TILE AND STONE

The flooring in both the main area and the shower are glossy hexagon patterned porcelain tiles in a flower pattern. The same tile is used in the shower niche to add visual focus. The shower features a classic white ceramic subway tile to keep with the clean, traditional style of the bathroom.

FINISHES

This bathroom boasts Venetian bronze lighting fixtures, plumbing fittings, and accessories that complement the room’s classic traditional aesthetics while introducing a touch of texture.

The enduring black and white flooring adds visual allure without modernizing the space, aligning seamlessly with the home’s age. Custom trim work was integrated, meticulously matching the baseboards and casings to those found throughout the house, with several existing wood doors repurposed.

Above the new double doors, a stained-glass transom window not only enhances visual appeal but also expands the perceived space.

Meanwhile, the bedroom flooring was laid with raw hardwood oak and finished on-site to closely mimic the original flooring throughout the rest of the house.

The finished master suite remodel brings a stronger sense of balance and comfort to daily life. Changes to the layout improved circulation and clarified how each area functions, making transitions between bedroom, bath, and dressing spaces feel more natural. Material and finish choices were selected to create a cohesive palette that feels warm and refined while performing well for everyday use. Thoughtful lighting and fixture selections support both task work and ambient comfort, helping each area feel inviting throughout the day. Storage solutions and surface decisions were designed to reinforce organization and ease of use. The result is a suite that elevates how the homeowners live in the space, adding both functional clarity and lasting design quality.
