Efficiency is Essential in Remodeling a Smaller Kitchen

Everybody thinks their kitchen is too small, but there are some spaces that are truly limited in size – say, under 150 square feet. Believe it or not, small kitchens pose more of a design challenge compared to larger kitchen remodels. With larger kitchens, we have the luxury of space for appliances and storage, for an island, and for more countertop area. In contrast, efficiency of space is essential for a smaller kitchen remodel. Here are a few things to consider.

It’s All in the Design

The benefit of a kitchen with less square footage is that you can have a tighter triangle – the area between the stove, sink, and refrigerator – making movement from one area to the next more efficient; the best designs take advantage of that. Galley kitchens, for example, allow for the most efficient triangle. Single-wall layouts, where the sink, countertops and cabinets, and appliances are aligned against one wall, use the smallest square footage possible. And an L-Shaped layout, which is more of a traditional layout, can offer familiarity as well as efficiency.

Scale Down

Generally, we see smaller kitchens in luxury condos and smaller houses lived in by a single person or a couple without children. So, with only one or two people to cook for, there is no need for a side-by-side refrigerator or double sink. Instead, choose smaller (sometimes referred to as “European” sized) appliances. Sinks, ovens, dishwashers, and even refrigerators are available in smaller scale yet are still high quality and maximizes space.

Make It Bright

Small kitchens can feel claustrophobic if the lighting isn’t right. Invest in high-quality undercabinet lighting and install plenty of down lighting or skylight to flood the space from every angle to avoid the feeling that you are working in a cave. In addition, lighter colored, large tile flooring gives the illusion that the space is bigger than it is

Small Spaces Can Still Be Luxurious

Just because your kitchen is smaller doesn’t mean that it can’t be luxurious and stylish. Make the most of what you have by choosing natural stone countertops, high end appliances and lighting, custom cabinets, and unique tile for backsplashes.
