Home Remodeling: Choose Quality Over Price

Home renovation and remodeling can be expensive, and homeowners are often tempted to cut costs by opting for a lesser quality product over a more expensive one. Now, if you are planning on selling your house soon, that may make sense, but if you plan on living in your home for five years or more, it can actually be less expensive in the long run to choose a quality product because of its durability.

The Kitchen

We’ve all heard the saying, “You get what you paid for” and that expression is especially true to things around your house that you use every day. In your kitchen, for example, think about how many times you open and close your cabinets every day. Stock cabinets from the big box store may be cheaper, but they are going to show wear and tear much sooner – the hinges will fail, the drawer sliders will stick, they stain more easily, and they will look “older” sooner. You may get a good five years out of them, but chances are, you are going to want to replace them not long after, adding to the overall cost. High quality cabinetry is worth the investment. Not only will the hardware last longer, but they also resist staining, warping, retain their aesthetic longer, and, with care, can last a lifetime. In the long-term, quality cabinets are less expensive that cheaper ones.

The Bathroom

You’ve probably gotten a flier in the mail for a simple or fast bathroom remodel. These shorter term solutions don’t have the lasting impact of a full redesign. Plus, they add very little value to your home. A quality bath remodel takes more than a day. Is it more expensive? Yes, but a custom bath remodel with durable tile, countertops, cabinetry, and fixtures will last decades without need of repair and even longer before replacement. In addition, the availability of decorative tiles makes style options almost limitless, quality tile and stone are far easier to clean and maintain than cheaper options, and a well-built bath will retain its value and offer a higher return on investment.

Play the Long Game

These are just two examples of where quality and durability justify higher cost, but there are other instances like with flooring, appliances, fixtures, and other features where this applies as well. So, keep in mind that craftmanship and quality materials may cost more initially, but are less expensive over time, so think long-term when considering remodeling.
