If you’re planning for a kitchen remodeling project, you may also be considering changing out your kitchen cabinets. Your kitchen cabinetry is so vital to the organization and flow of your kitchen space. Choosing what kind of cabinets to go with when remodeling the kitchen is a pretty important decision. You’ll come across many different kitchen cabinet styles and it can be confusing to know what’s the best for your family! So we’re here to help explain what the big difference is between the different types of kitchen cabinets!
What You Need To Know: Stock vs. Custom Kitchen Cabinets
When it comes to choosing kitchen cabinets, you’re making a big decision! There are, usually, three different styles of kitchen cabinets to choose from; stock, custom, or semi-custom kitchen cabinets. While each of them has their pro’s and con’s it’s important to make the right decision for your families needs when picking which style to go with! Make sure to talk to your design-build team about what cabinets would be the best for your space and families routine!
Stock Kitchen Cabinets
Stock cabinets are pretty common and these are most likely what you have the most interaction with. Stock cabinets are also sometimes called “RTA” cabinets, or ready to assemble cabinets. They are the models and styles of cabinets that one is able to purchase from a wholesaler and have easily assembled and installed in your kitchen!
Stock cabinets tend to be the cheaper option, since the styles are widely available and easier to work with. Stock cabinets come in standard sizes and are quick to incorporate in your newly remodeled space.
The downside of stock options is that they are one-in-the-same. Stock cabinets do not allow for any if much customization. If there is a specific feature that you are looking for, stock cabinets might now be the best option.
Regardless, stock cabinets will be able to fit seamlessly in your space due to the standardization of them. Plus you’ll be able to get your dream kitchen faster with a stock option!
Custom Kitchen Cabinets
Custom kitchen counters have such a great appeal to them! Imagine having your fully whole customized kitchen space! Cabinets designed specifically to your family, your routine, and your kitchen habits! That one cabinet that’s just filled with random utensils and pots now has special cabinets for all of those things!
Custom kitchen cabinets has the beautiful appeal of just being uniquely designed. The drawbacks of these cabinets are that they tend to be more expensive and take much longer to design, build, and install. If your remodeling project is one that is time sensitive, these cabinets might not be the one for your family.
Semi-Custom Kitchen Cabinets
One cabinet style is too general, one cabinet style is too unique, and then there’s semi-custom kitchen cabinets that are just right! Semi-custom kitchen cabinets tend to be different from both sides and from each other. The difference between these style of cabinets versus the other two is harder to take note of. Some cabinets may be completely custom while the rest are stock, some aspects of the cabinets; say the door or spacing within it, can be custom while the rest is stock.
Usually semi-custom kitchen cabinets are able to pick at a wholesaler while molding itself specifically to your desired measurements and space! Because of these qualities, semi-custom cabinets tend to be less expensive than fully custom cabinets and take a shorter amount of time to manufacturer and install.
What's The Cost?
When taking into consideration the cost of what each of these kitchen cabinet options will take, you cannot solely look into the financial cost of each option. While financial cost is important to take you’ll see that fully custom cabinets will be the most expensive, semi-custom will be less expensive, and normal stock cabinets will be the cheapest option to take.
It’s important to take into the conversation of cost of how long each option will take, the time cost of each of these options should be talked over with your design-build team.
Another cost to take into consideration is long-term costs. How much upkeep will each option take? How important is it to you and your family that you get fully custom cabinets to complete your dream kitchen? How much is your family going to be using all of the available kitchen space?
Choosing The Right Kitchen Cabinets For Your Family
Regardless of the option you choose, ensure that it will make your family happy and makes the kitchen as functional as possible for your family. Functionality is key at the end of the day!
