DESIGN CONCEPT

This renovation updates the home with a warm, modern material palette while retaining architectural character throughout. Natural wood, dark accents, warm metal finishes, neutral wall colors, and textured surfaces are repeated from room to room for consistency. The design also emphasizes existing volume and natural light, using exposed beams, vaulted ceilings, skylights, large windows, and open sightlines as key architectural features. Custom storage was incorporated throughout the home to improve function without adding visual clutter.

ORIGINAL FLOOR PLAN

The original floor plan had more separation between the primary living spaces and did not fully take advantage of the home’s ceiling heights, natural light, or available storage. The kitchen, living areas, stair circulation, primary suite, and service spaces required better visual connections and more functional built-ins. Existing secondary spaces also provided opportunities for dedicated storage, laundry, closet, and drop-zone functions.

NEW FLOOR PLAN

The renovated plan creates stronger connections between the kitchen, living room, dining area, and stair hall while maintaining definition between each space. A large framed opening connects the living room to the kitchen and provides a long interior sightline through the main level. The stair and upper landing were opened with wood rails and black metal balusters to improve visibility between levels.

The primary suite was reorganized around a vaulted bedroom, a large walk-in closet, and an expanded bathroom. The bathroom includes a double vanity, central storage tower, freestanding tub, enclosed shower, and increased natural light from windows and skylights. A dedicated laundry room and mudroom were also developed with extensive cabinetry, work surfaces, seating, and storage.

Black metal is used at stair railings, interior glazing, hardware, and accent elements. A patterned stair runner adds texture while leaving the wood treads exposed at the edges.

Custom cabinetry was used throughout the renovation to establish a consistent level of detail. The mudroom uses dark cabinetry with tall enclosed storage, open cubbies, hooks, overhead shelving, and wood bench seating.

A glossy blue-gray vertical tile backsplash provides contrast against the dark cabinetry and light countertop in the laundry room.

DETAILS:

CABINETS

Custom cabinetry was used throughout the renovation to increase storage and establish a consistent level of detail. The laundry room features dark painted inset-style cabinetry with tall storage, upper cabinets, base cabinets, work surfaces, a utility sink, and warm metal hardware. The mudroom uses similarly dark cabinetry with tall enclosed storage, open cubbies, hooks, overhead shelving, and wood bench seating.

The primary bathroom includes wood cabinetry with inset-style doors and drawers, a long double vanity, and a full-height central storage cabinet. Wall-mounted faucets keep the countertop clear and reinforce the streamlined layout. The walk-in closet incorporates built-in hanging sections, adjustable shelving, drawers, upper storage, integrated lighting, and a window seat with additional cabinetry below.

TILE AND STONE

Tile and stone were used to distinguish wet and utility areas while maintaining the project’s neutral palette. The primary bathroom uses a dark gray slab-style countertop and backsplash at the vanity. The shower combines glossy, vertically installed dark tile on the upper walls with a wood-look vertical tile treatment below. A recessed shower niche is integrated into the dark tile and extends across the rear wall.

The shower floor uses small-format dark stone or stone-look mosaic tile, which continues around the freestanding tub area. The black-framed glass shower enclosure separates the wet area while maintaining visibility and natural light. In the laundry room, a glossy blue-gray vertical tile backsplash provides contrast against the dark cabinetry and light countertop. The mudroom floor uses a narrow rectangular tile in varied neutral tones for a durable transition from the exterior entry.

FINISHES

Wide-plank wood flooring runs through the primary living areas, stairs, bedroom, and closet, paired with substantial white baseboards and natural wood doors. Exposed and applied wood beams reinforce the architecture in the living spaces and vaulted bedroom. Neutral gray, taupe, and off-white wall colors provide a consistent background for the darker architectural details.

The completed renovation creates a consistent interior across both the main living spaces and private areas. The kitchen functions as the central workspace and connects directly to the adjoining living area, while cabinetry and architectural woodwork provide continuity throughout the home. The primary suite combines a vaulted bedroom, organized walk-in closet, and bathroom with separate vanity, shower, and tub zones. Supporting spaces such as the laundry room and mudroom receive the same level of built-in storage and finish coordination as the main rooms. Repeated wood tones, gray surfaces, black metal details, and brass-toned accents tie the project together without relying on a single finish or material.
