DESIGN CONCEPT

The family wanted a complete first-floor update to bring more functionality to their living space. To do this, we designed a plan that extends the flow of the kitchen into the adjacent, existing sunroom. The house sits nestled in front of a beautiful, wooded backyard that the family wanted to incorporate into the design. To achieve this, we used a natural color palette and materials to enhance the connection to nature.

ORIGINAL FLOOR PLAN

The original floor plan included a wall sectioning off the den from the sunroom/kitchen which caused the sunroom to be underutilized by the family. The mudroom had a full door leading into the kitchen which caused a tight squeeze when going from one room to the other. Overall, the original floor plan restricted the flow between rooms.

NEW FLOOR PLAN

To open up the space and encourage more use of the sunroom, we opened up the wall connecting the den to the kitchen/sunroom. We added a large island to bridge the sunroom and kitchen while giving the family seating facing the living room. To provide more space in the kitchen and mudroom, the family opted for a modern sliding pocket door to connect the kitchen and mudroom. We finished the space by adding a bar area between the den and the office for ease and functionality when entertaining guests.

FINISHES

Since the home has a beautiful, wooded backyard, the family wanted to incorporate natural elements into the finishes to reflect the woods. To achieve this look, we installed stained wood cabinetry in the mudroom and for the kitchen island. These cabinets coordinate with the dark wood flooring of the first floor, cohesively connecting the spaces. We took inspiration from nature with the color palette, keeping things earthy with browns and greens. To complement the greens and browns of the cabinetry, the family went with matte black accents in the light and plumbing fixtures. The matte black continues to the drawer pulls which continue on in the same style and feature gold accents.

CABINETS

For continuity throughout the first floor, all of the cabinets are from Legacy Crafted in their Milton Full Overlay style. The kitchen island and mudroom cabinets are in the color “Stained Suede,” while the oven wall and base perimeter are painted “Hunter Green” to highlight the natural color palette. To contrast this while keeping things neutral, the upper perimeter cabinets are painted “Anew Gray.”

TILE & STONE

For consistency between the mudroom and kitchen, the family decided on MSI’s Calacatta Prado countertops, which give a clean and modern feeling to the space. In the mudroom, the family decided on a Denmark-style backsplash tile, giving the space a pop of color and texture. The kitchen backsplash is Portmore “White” tile that extends up to the ceiling giving a classy and unique look to the space.
