Upper Holland Kitchen Remodel

DESIGN CONCEPT

This family in Upper Holland wanted to completely transform their kitchen to make their home the premiere place for their friends and family to come over for parties. They wanted a functional and open kitchen that had plenty of space to gather. The family ultimately chose a transitional style with moody colors and gold elements to give an elegant and modern feel.

ORIGINAL FLOOR PLAN

The original floor plan featured an island that interfered with the flow of the room and sectioned off the counter area that created a tight corridor that made entertaining difficult. The kitchen was also separated from the living room by a half-wall which impaired flow between spaces.

NEW FLOOR PLAN

In the new floor plan design, we replaced the small and awkward kitchen island with a larger, more functional island parallel to the outside wall. The island includes added seating for entertaining and it stretches into the dining room to encourage flow between spaces. We removed the half wall entirely to connect the spaces and make the home feel unified. We created a luxurious bar area that ties the kitchen and the living room together for added entertainment possibilities.

FINISHES

The kitchen features dark, classy, and clean finishes, tying in dark blues, warm browns, blacks, and gold accents to create a truly transitional space. The dark blue cabinets and windows with gold pulls give the space a dynamic elegance while the warm browns from the wood island bring a natural and warm element to the space. The matte black lighting fixtures and gold accents tie the room together and give it a “moody” ambiance.

CABINETS

For consistency, all of the cabinets are the same Shaker style from Wellborn. For added contrast, they chose Wellborn’s “Blue” for the primary perimeter cabinetry as well as for the bar area. The accent surface cabinet and the island cabinetry are both Wellborn’s “Oak River Rock.”

TILE & STONE

The family decided on Bedrosian’s “Cloe Grey” subway tiles for their backsplash to add a classic feel to the space. Both the bar backsplash and the countertops are Stonetech’s “Taj Mahal” leathered quartzite to add a luxurious feel to the space and to tie the kitchen together with the modern and textured component that fits perfectly with the “moody” ambiance of the rest of the kitchen.
