Modernizing an Older Home

One of the unique qualities of our area of Southeast PA is the abundance of older homes. Within the same town you can find Early American farmhouses, colonial brick homes and row homes, large Victorian Era homes, Mid-Century style, and then Contemporary new construction. One of the most common challenges we come across is in modernizing an older home. We have clients come to us that want to update their older home without clashing with its feel and style, but don’t know how. Below we will look at some recent home remodels as examples of blending the modern with the classic.
This Folsom Bathroom remodel is anchored by new, turn-of-the-century inspired subway tiles and the marbled tile floors that keep with the style of the home. Modern accent tiles, soaking tub, fixtures, and glass shower surround update the look and function of the bathroom without detracting from its feel.

Contemporary Updates in a Rustic Home

So how do you keep the feel and style of an old rustic home, like this one in Doylestown, while adding all of the modern amenities? Our designers worked with the homeowners in choosing cabinetry, countertops, tiles, and fixtures that seamlessly incorporate contemporary appliances and functions without looking awkward. The blend of barnwood beams, earth tone tile, and stylized cabinetry with contemporary design in the master suite renovation allows room for modern luxury while keeping with the rustic look. The same for the kitchen. Pine cabinets, soapstone counter tops, and a stone vent help the modern stovetop, dishwasher, and microwave go virtually unnoticed (see top image).

Although updating and remodeling an older home can be challenging, it can be done, and done well. We recommend that you work with one of our design-build experts to help you find ideas and inspiration from the many older home remodels that we’ve done. Whether it is a full house remodel like the one in Jamison, or just the bathroom like in Folsom, our designers have knowledge and experience in remodeling older homes. Chances are, they will have a solution that you’ve never considered. For more examples of what we can do with older homes, contact us to schedule a consultation.
