Gladwyne Dormer Addition & Elevator
DESIGN CONCEPT
The design intent for this project was to seamlessly integrate modern function into a classic residence while preserving its architectural integrity. The homeowners were intentional about planning for the future, seeking a way to incorporate an elevator that would allow full access to every level of their home as they age, without sacrificing the spaces they love or the home’s established character. Improved accessibility and a more practical use of the upper levels were achieved through thoughtful design, ensuring functionality never came at the expense of style. The new elevator and dormer were conceived as natural extensions of the existing structure, with careful attention to proportion, materials, and roofline continuity. The result is a balanced addition that supports long-term livability while maintaining a timeless aesthetic consistent with the rest of the home.
ORIGINAL FLOOR PLAN
Before renovation, the upper level of the home offered limited headroom and constrained circulation, while vertical access between floors was dependent solely on a traditional stairway. The lack of an elevator limited accessibility to the upper and lower levels and created a separation between main living areas and the private spaces above. The third-floor layout was largely underutilized due to the sloped ceilings and minimal natural light.
NEW FLOOR PLAN
The reconfigured plan introduces a four-stop elevator serving the basement through the third floor, offering effortless access to every level of the home. Structural underpinning was completed to accommodate the new elevator pit and shaft, integrating seamlessly with existing foundation walls. A new shed dormer was added to the third floor to increase ceiling height and usable square footage, while allowing natural light to flood the previously enclosed space. The revised layout transforms the upper floor into a functional guest suite with a private bath, closet space, and comfortable seating area. Circulation was improved throughout, creating smooth transitions between the new and existing spaces.
FINISHES
Throughout the renovation, finishes were chosen to complement the home’s existing character while introducing a fresh, updated feel. Rich wood tones in the guest suite pair with soft, neutral wall colors to establish warmth and continuity. Subtle contrast in flooring and trim details provides depth without overwhelming the space. The new elevator addition was finished inside and out with materials consistent with the home’s palette, including a smooth stucco exterior and matching roof shingles to create a cohesive look from every angle.
CABINETS
The guest bathroom features custom-stained cabinetry designed with traditional paneling and clean, timeless lines. The wood finish brings natural texture and warmth to the room, complementing the surrounding tile and countertop selections. Storage solutions were tailored to maximize functionality within a compact footprint, offering both visual balance and practical use.
TILE & STONE
A mix of refined tile and stone surfaces was selected to ground the new bath in understated luxury. The main bathroom floor uses a matte-finish terrazzo-look tile, providing a soft pattern and durable surface underfoot. Shower walls are lined with a light ceramic tile for brightness and visual expansion, while the shower floor introduces honed mosaic stone for texture and grip. The vanity top is finished in a creamy taupe-toned surface that ties the room’s elements together, creating a cohesive and timeless retreat.
